Sheep Meanderings…

Hopefully your year has started off as good as ours has – the Sheep Incognito flock has been meandering around the art meadow already, even though much of it is still in Winter Mode. To avoid the cold and the Snowpocalypse that gripped the Southeast a few weeks ago, we took my flock of Sheep Incognito paintings and prints on a road trip to Sunshine State Florida. Except, it really did not live up to it’s name…

The first show of this year was the always lovely, and perfectly managed by Paragon Events Sarasota Fine Art Show. Right across the road from the Marina and Marina Jack’s in Sarasota, the show was comprised of some very nice, high-end artwork from about 100 artists. The visitor numbers from last year’s show there (which was the first year this event took place there) had almost doubled, it seems.  We received so many nice comments and smiles from everybody, that this most likely will remain in our top three list of places to spend January in Florida at.

Of course, because we needed a bit of a break from the cold, the weather decided to remind us why we brought some long sleeved shirt with us on the trip: it started raining. And the next morning, it rained some more. And then, it decided it needed a bit more rain…We spent quite a bit of time sitting in the mobile studio (our RV), rather than meandering, visiting the manatees, or checking up on the Mouse with the big round ears.

But we did get a chance to take a few walks along the beach, gathering inspiration for some nature themed jewelry, and just letting our right side of the brain do some playing. So even with the lower temperatures, the ideas for making new things happen, how to make people smile, and to make the world a little brighter with my art kept coming. A very comforting fact…

After a week of sitting in the tin can there, we felt energized enough to get back on the road, heading north-east to lovely Mount Dora, Florida to attend the Mount Dora Arts Festival. This was my fourth year there (maybe third instead? can’t remember…hello senile me…), and though attendance was down quite a bit on Saturday, it was still packed with people all weekend long. Sunday finally rewarded us with mid 70’s and 80’s for temperatures, and a large crowd of people. Not very many art pieces walked out of the area, but still, all in all, my top Florida show historically.

The nice part is getting to re-visit with artist friends – some only do 5 shows a year, so it’s almost a miracle to cross paths with them at all the shows we do…

The other nice part, is the people that stand out from the crowd – the ones that make a memory, that make us smile, that make the world a better place, if even just for a moment in time.
Once such person – whose name I do not know, and whose face I probably would not be able to call out of a line-up – was a gentleman who just casually walked up to my desk, handed me a handful of candy, and said: “Thank you for being here – your work made me smile. You deserve to have some candy…”.

Another such moment, was a lady walking out of my booth with a big smile on her face. She said “I needed that smile today – my friend is very sick, and will not be getting better. I REALLY needed that smile. And, this is the first time since my husband passed on one and a half years ago, that I’ve been out and on a trip by myself”.

Or the lady at the table next to us, after looking through one of my calendars, who started silently crying, because one of the images captured her and her son and their relationship perfectly – even though we had never met before.

Or the guy fixing our trailer, who generously let us park the trailer in his lot for free, and who gave me a big bear hug as we were leaving his shop. Just because, it’s a thing one does. Or should be doing more of.

The world is filled with these sparkling stars in my world – I do count each one of those people and events as blessings – they do not go unnoticed.

I may forget faces, I more often than not forget names, I regularly forget appointments, birthdays, events, papers, etc. – but I do not forget the people that make my world a better place.

A Different Kind of Christmas

Celebrating Christmas usually is my favorite time of the year – the lights, buying presents for loved ones, the food, the times together playing games, watching movies, doing puzzles, and laughing…

This year, all that was toned wayyy down in our house – a sick mom is really no fun for anyone…I spent five days sick on the couch, with no energy to do much of anything. The kids were troopers, and very caring and condiserate – but I know they missed the hubbub and joyful atmosphere we usually have in the house…

So the question is: fake it to make them happy, or just go with what is, and see it in contrast to the happier christmasses we’ve celebrated before and will be celebrating again?

Never quite sure what the better approach is for that…the good part is, that I am slowly on the mend and gaining a bit of energy back. We are making the most of the few days during christmas break to do all the things we had planned for Christmas…

And who knows, I might even get some painting done this coming week – it’s been a long while since I’ve had a chance to work in my studio.

New Year’s Eve will be a marathon of Hobbitses, Dwarves, and Elves – can hardly wait…

A Glimpse Under The Trenchcoat: 1st Edition

So you want to know how I came up with the Sheep idea? Well, it all began like this:

“there once was a blank canvas on my easel, and some paint and paint brushes nearby”

…pretty much each and every one of my paintings begins like that. What happens when those things get together with my thought processes takes the story in a whole different direction, though.

Many times, before I even unwrap the canvas, I have a general idea of either a message I want to impart, a pun or phrase I think the Sheep Incognito would be good at interpreting, an image I would like to try creating, or, sometimes, I simply feel like flinging paint around.

To explain that a bit better, I think it’s best to go sheep by sheep to give you some insight into the process and inner workings of my artistic mind. I hope you brought a good flashlight along – it’s a dark place in there…

Today’s “Under the Trenchcoat” victim: DANCES WITH WOOLS

This painting began with a conversation between a longtime artist friend, her son who makes oil paints, and myself, who is always on the lookout for good or better materials. I was offered the opportunity to give his new line of hand-crafted oils a try on one of my new paintings – so of course I jumped right in. He had given me a small set of oils – almost none of them my usual color set. So it would be challenging to create the usual vibrancy in the painting without the use of my normal palette.

With no title in mind, I just wanted to paint the essence of happiness, contentment, and exuberance, touched with a bit of childlike innocence. So a dancing sheep, engrossed in the moment and movement – carefree and lighthearted – was just the thing. I finished the initial sketch of the sheep – then realized that without a reason to be dancing, she would look just a bit out of context, and it was not clear WHY the sheep was happy. There are all kinds of things that make all kinds of people (or sheep) happy – but since we were heading to the New York Sheep & Wool Festival, there really was only one thing that could be danced with in this painting: Yarn! It is what knitters crave, crocheters seek out, spinners fantasize over, and dyers get heart flutters about.

The new oils turned out to be luscious and easy to work with – lighter than my usual paints. The blue was just right, and for the skin tones, these new paints worked better than what I usually opt for. The only issue popped up trying to paint the red yarn and the red flowers – to keep with my usual color scheme for knitting images in recent times, I needed to add some cad light red to make things “zing!”.

As I was painting the yarn, I was also desperately trying to come up with a title – “doing the happy dance” or “springy flingy thingy” just didn’t seem to groove with this one…It needed something that connects to the real world, or at least makes it recognizeable. At which point the title “Dances with Wools” was born – it sounds and looks a lot like a familiar movie title, but brings it into the world of Sheep Incognito, where things are questioned, re-interpreted in a sheepish way, or re-purposed to fit the sheeps’ view of the world around us.

DANCES WITH WOOLS has quite rapidly become a new favorite among my knitting and fiber world friends… so if you want to join that hype, you can order prints of it by clicking here to purchase

If you have questions about the process involved, colors used, etc., just drop me a line in the comments section.

A Flock of Sheep for Christmas

Caravan to Baaathlehem

CARAVAN TO BAAATHLEHEM – A flock of Sheep on the way to Bethlehem

Because sheep seem to be very observant for the most part – unless there is corn involved, then they throw all caution to the wind – they noticed something amiss in the Christmas Story as we know it: the three wise guys. The gifts. They were all wrong for someone who supposedly was just born. Yes, the baby is a king. But in the world of sheep, even kings start out as little lambs. And those generally do not derive any kind of joy or excitement over little bits of gold, myrrh or frankincense…
Of course, nobody later wanted to mention rubber duckies, dinosaur eggs, or the mysterious contents of the box that the flock of sheep brought to the manger that special night. But it might be safe to assume that in fact, those might have been the best gifts of the event.
They just did not have the writing skills to keep records for the generations afterwards…that’s where the wise guys had the advantage: if the marketing guys say it was so, then that is what will be in the history books.

Well. here is your chance to help make this Christmas join the history books in someone’s life: from now until December 20th, 2013, you can save 20% on your entire purchase in the Sheep Incognito shop by entering coupon code SIStNick2013 at checkout.
Sheep know what good gifts look like – don’t be the one with the box of smelly wood bits this year…

Winding Down the Year

After being in more States than I care to remember, setting up more shows than I can count, and meeting more people than live in my town, we are finally getting to the last event of this year – it’s the big one!

For a few more days, the Sheep Incognito Flock will be hanging out at the always phenomenal Southern Christmas Show at the Charlotte Expo Center. 12 Days of five buildings filled with any- and everything you might possibly associate with the holiday season. Comes complete with live music, roasted nuts, mulled cider, Dickens attired folk, and the new Sheep Incognito Christmas Painting “Fleece Navidad”.

Last Day at the Roanoke Civic Center Craftsmen’s Classics Tomorrow

Fall Tour Season Has Begun!

After a very sandy and windy show at this year’s Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach, and a big flood that shut the show early at the St James Court Art Show in Louisville, we are really excited that we are done with outdoor shows for this year.
Summer this year was weird. Out of all the shows we did, only two were without excessive heat or excessive rain – which of course took a huge chunk out of sales as well…
After the rain last week, we were sure a lot of my work would be completely destroyed after a few days in the trailer – but we got lucky.

And: FALL IS HERE!
So we made it to the Craftsmen’s Classic In Roanoke, VA to reconnect with long-time fellow “Carnies”, Artists, and Crafts people, as well as owners of my Sheep Incognito flock of art pieces.

It’s so lovely to meet smiling faces, catch up with everybody, and see what is happening in other people’s lives.
And of course, there is always a bit of gossip involved. My favorite tidbit this weekend: my ex had been claiming that my paintings were his, and that I only painted because of him.
I was not the only one laughing about that one….

Anyway- as always, good fun, good times, and, good things are to be had here in Roanoke this weekend.
Admission is free. Free. No cost. And, bring a food donation for the foodbank.
Free.

My two favorite booths this year: right beside us is fellow artist Ayenne Applebaum – she makes the most beautiful porcelain and clay pottery sculptures of coral reef and whimsical vessels. Love her stuff! And, she’s a lovely lady to get to hang out with – I love people that think!

The other booth is a brand new addition to the show circuit – a photographer that does local Roanoke images, but in a contemporary style. His booth was packed all day long…he looked exhausted by the time evening came around.

Tomorrrow is the final day here – lots of new Sheep Incognito paintings, prints and giclées, along with the new Sheep Incognito Bling and the 2014 Calendars.

If you can’t make it here, you can always visit the website at Charisma-Art.Com

The best prices will still be at the show though…drop us a line, introduce yourself, or let us know how your life works – we love getting connected with you!

A Beautiful Day

It’s a Beautiful Day

Today is the day.
It has been a long time coming – a time wrought with fear, anxiety, discussions, screaming fights, and meltdowns. But, nonetheless, today has come.

Today, we drive.

On The Interstate (yes, this needed to be capitalized).

My daughter has been dreading this event for quite a while – each day the necessity of learning to merge on and off the interstate has come up, there were long discussions and hurt feelings ensuing.

A fear of doing things wrong – is that a teenager thing? A learned response from emotional abuse for much of her life? A self- inflicted horror idea now set firmly in her head?
Whatever the cause, whatever the story – TODAY WE DRIVE.

We have not discussed where we are going – she’s the driver, so we’ll go where she is going.
(Hopefully all the destinations will include firm ground under the wheels, and a big void in front of the car…)

When this is done, we will both have successfully ascended a Mount Everest for both of us. I think the view will be grand from up there….
